About this Earth's Impact Craters Poster

Every impact crater on this in-color poster is a place where a meteorite, asteroid, or comet arrived without warning. Our impact crater poster encompasses ages from a 3.024-billion-year-old structure in Western Australia (Archean impact) to the witnessed fall of Chelyabinsk in 2013 CE — roughly two-thirds of Earth's history, compressed into a single sheet.

The poster or chart is built on Schmieder & Kring (2020), Astrobiology 20:91–141, then sifted carefully and extended from the primary literature through 2026. Every entry carries its country, latitude and longitude in decimal degrees (WGS 84 / GPS datum), diameter in kilometers, and best-estimate age. Structures are grouped by region, so the United States, the rest of North America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia, and Australia each read as a block rather than an undifferentiated alphabetical run.

Reading the Chart

The notation is deliberately conservative, because the impact literature is not always uniform in what it reports. Diameters are given in kilometers; where a publication gives a range, the midpoint is shown. Ages are best estimates only, and a tilde (~) marks the midpoint of a published range rather than a measurement in its own right. Figures marked with an asterisk are recent enough to be expressed in years rather than millions of years, and a CE date is used only for a witnessed fall — Carancas, Peru, in 2007 is a clear example. An em dash means the literature offers no useful figure or position, which is itself important.

That last convention matters more than it looks. A blank cell on a chart like this is not an oversight; it is an honest statement that a structure is accepted as an impact site while its age or its precise center as of August, 2026 still remains unresolved.

Why 209, and Why 19 More

The confirmed count reflects structures for which shock-metamorphic evidence, shatter cones, impact melt, or comparable diagnostic criteria have been established and published. Structures that are widely discussed but not yet demonstrated to that standard are carried in a separate contested block of 19 rather than being quietly folded into the main count or omitted altogether. A collector or instructor working from this poster can therefore see both what the field has settled, and what it has not.

Current Through 2026

Impact geochronology has moved quickly in the last several years, and the chart reflects that. Vredefort held the title of oldest confirmed terrestrial impact structure until Yarrabubba displaced it; Yarrabubba in turn was displaced by Miralga, dated in June 2026 to 3.024 billion years. Post-2019 discoveries are incorporated throughout, along with several diameter and age corrections that supersede figures still circulating in older compilations and classroom handouts.

This poster is dated and versioned on the sheet itself, so anyone using it for teaching or cataloging can tell at a glance how current their copy is.
