Rare Black Smoker Hydrothermal Vent Chimney
This is a very rare black smoker hydrothermal vent chimney specimen for sale, displayed in a Riker box with an image of a hydrothermal vent. Hydrothermal vent chimneys typically form along mid-ocean ridges, near geological hotspots. They transport heat and chemicals from deep within the Earth's interior, showcasing our planet's marvelous geological activity even in the deep ocean!
Discovery and Significance
The Scripps Institution of Oceanography first discovered black smoker hydrothermal vent chimneys in 1979. These ocean vents are an oasis for exotic life forms that thrive on energy from chemicals precipitating into the water, a process known as chemoautotrophy.
Black Smokers vs. White Smokers
Black smoker hydrothermal vent chimneys differ from white smoker hydrothermal vent chimneys. There is ongoing debate about which type was more suitable for the evolution of life. White smokers are typically more alkaline and often have a different chemical profile.
Origin and Features
This black smoker hydrothermal vent chimney specimen is from the Rodriguez Triple Junction (RTJ), Central Indian Ridge, Indian Ocean. Even without magnification, the tiny hydrothermal vent pores are easy to see, making it very photogenic. Minerals in this specimen include Pyrite XX.
