Did you know that the lunar rock samples brought back by the Apollo 11 mission in 1969 contained three minerals that had never been seen on Earth? While two of these minerals were later found on Earth, the third, tranquillityite, remained exclusive to moon rock samples and meteorites until 2011. However, recent discoveries have shown that tranquillityite can also be found in certain rocks in Western Australia. Want to learn more about rare mineral finds on the Moon? There is more.

Tranquillityite, a fascinating mineral discovered on the Moon, has captivated scientists and researchers alike. Named after the Sea of Tranquility, the site where Apollo 11 astronauts landed in 1969, tranquillityite is an extraordinary gem that holds both lunar and terrestrial significance. The Lunar Tranquility Base, located within the Sea of Tranquility, was a monumental moment in human history when Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first humans to set foot on the Moon. The landing site was chosen for its relatively flat surface and minimal obstacles, ensuring a safe touchdown for the Apollo 11 mission.

The mineral tranquillityite, armalcolite, and pyroxferroite are three minerals initially discovered on the Moon before any terrestrial occurrences were found. These minerals provide valuable insights into the Moon's geological composition and its formation processes.

Tranquillityite boasts a unique chemical formula: (Fe2+, Ca)8(Zr, Y)2Ti3(SiO4)3O12. Its coloration ranges from gray to dark red-brown, with a calculated specific gravity of 4.7. With a hexagonal crystal system, tranquillityite showcases its allure through its distinctive structure and composition. This lunar mineral consists of essential elements such as iron, silicon, oxygen, zirconium, titanium, and a minute quantity of yttrium, a rare earth element. During the Moon's geological evolution, it formed as a silicate mineral that crystallizes from magma and other late-forming minerals.

Tranquillityite's presence is not limited to the Moon alone. Surprisingly, this mineral has been discovered in select locations on Earth, with Western Australia being one of its notable sites, where this mineral was found. In this region, tranquillityite can be found in ancient rocks that date back billions of years.

Size of specimen: 55mm L X 35mm W X 24mm D. Ships with a Certificate of Authenticity, tag, tag stand, and information about the specimen. Plexiglass base and sizing cube not included.

Now you have an opportunity to get tranquillityite. This rare mineral, named after the Sea of Tranquility, symbolizes humanity's triumph in reaching the Moon. Its unique composition and presence on Earth, particularly in Western Australia, offers invaluable insights into our understanding of lunar geology and the processes that shaped our Moon.

This specimen ships with a Certificate of Authenticity, tag, tag stand and information about the specimen.
