Black Onaping Glass: A Unique Impact Glass from Sudbury
Black Onaping glass is a unique impact glass found in the Onaping Formation within the Sudbury Impact Structure in Ontario, Canada. It has a very specific appearance and is unlike other impact glass. This extraordinary glass is formed from a combination of surge deposits, suevite, and reworked materials in an aqueous environment at Sudbury.
Distinctive Characteristics of Black Onaping Glass
Unlike other volcanic glass, Onaping glass showcases a range of different chemical compositions and petrographical characteristics. These qualities hint at a fascinating process called shock vitrification, supported by country rock clasts with microscopic shock-induced changes found in this impact glass.
Geological Significance
The Sudbury Structure and the Onaping Formation's heterolithic breccias and igneous complex have long been subjects of debate. While a meteorite impact origin is widely accepted, the recrystallized Onaping Formation glasses' origins continue to be discussed and studied.
