Learn More About Trinitite Atomic Glass
Have you heard about Trinitite? It's also known as "atomic glass" or "nuclear glass." It was created during the Trinity nuclear test in 1945. This unique material was formed as a result of the intense heat from the detonation of the first atomic bomb.
The violence of the blast literally scooped up the New Mexico desert floor, at Alamogordo, ejected it high into the atmosphere. As the material fused and cooled - it literally "rained" this atomic glass back down to Earth. Most of the pieces have a distinctive bubbly or frothy appearance when magnified.
Several different types of Trinitite have been identified. Green is the most common form. Black and red contain iron from the tower structure. Red contains copper from the 'gadget' or the communications cables leading away from the site. Trinitite can have iron mixed in it because the tower that held the bomb was made of steel. (Steel is an alloy consisting primarily of iron).
The Trinity test had several scientific goals. Scientists aimed to verify the implosion design, which involved surrounding a fissile "core" with two different high explosives. They also studied the energy release, symmetry, and fireball behavior to estimate damage. This test introduced unprecedented techniques and experiments and led to groundbreaking insights, forever changing the world's understanding of atomic weaponry.
Notice: All of our Trinitite has been tested as being authentic. Orders are shipped in compliance with Section 13 from part 40 of the NRC Nuclear Regulatory Commission rules and regulations and Postal Service regulations specified in 49 CFR 173.421 for activity limits of low-level radioactive materials. We ship all items per Postal Service activity limits set in Publication 52. The sale of the trinitite complies with all U.S. Federal regulations.
Size of Trinitite: 14mm L X 13mm W X 7mm D. Weight: 0.7 grams. The color is green. Our trinitite was legally collected in 1948. The photos are of the front, back and description tag.
Ships in a plastic display disc with information, tag, tag stand, Certificate of Authenticity and XRF. Acrylic base, and photo cube are not included but are readily available on Amazon.
Trinitite is a fascinating addition to any geological collection due to its historical significance and unique appearance.
