The Hell's Gate "African Rift Valley" location is one of the most interesting and famous geological locations on our planet! Not only is this specimen from one of the filming locations for the action-packed adventure Lara Croft Tomb Raider "Cradle of Life," but the area holds special significance to the history of early mankind and the continuing changing geological evolution of the continent of Africa itself.
The Hell's Gate National Park has many interesting geological attributes. It is named after a narrow break in the cliffs (the gate), which once hosted a tributary of a prehistoric lake that nurtured early humans in this Rift Valley region. The Great Rift Valley is a geological term that actually refers to the valley of the East African Rift. This region is in the process of intense geological action, splitting the African Plate into two new separate plates, the Nubian Plate and the Somali Plate.
The two plates are thought to have initially formed about 35 million years ago and the separation is ongoing.
