Volcanic Bomb Java Indonesia
This is a colorful scientific display containing a volcanic bomb, from Indonesia. The explosive eruption of a volcano is one of the most violent naturally occurring events on Earth. There are an estimated 1500 volcanic cones found all over the world, with most being either extinct or dormant. There are about 500 active volcanoes with the majority located in two volcanic belts; the most famous being the “Ring of Fire,” surrounding the Pacific Ocean. The Indonesian island country of Java is almost entirely volcanic in origin, and is a part of this “Ring of Fire.” It contains thirty-eight mountains that have at one time or another been active volcanoes (many still active in current times).
This region is also home to the historic Krakatoa volcano, some 50 miles north of the Banten province. Volcanic bombs are formed from blobs of molten basalt that have been ejected with a spin from an eruption. They take on irregular shapes as they cool and fall to the ground and are considered to be relatively rare as most shatter upon landing. This volcanic bomb was collected during a scientific expedition to the region, in 2018.
