This Libyan Desert Glass came from the Libyan Desert, located in the north African country of Libya. It is an all-natural glass that was formed as a result of a comet or meteorite impact that occurred in this desert region about 26 million years ago. The desert sand was melted by the heat of the impact, ejected into the air, coalesced and cooled on its way back to Earth. These straw-colored yellow droplets are the signature remnants of this impact and closely match the color of the sun. The ancient Egyptians were probably the first to discover Libyan Desert Glass, using it for trade, jewelry and decoration. They were fascinated enough with it to carve it into the form of a scarab which was placed as the centerpiece in one of the breast plates for the young Egyptian Pharaoh King Tutankhamun. This froth-like yellow gemstone has been made into this fine cosmic jewelry. Found by bedouins and explorers, it has made its way to you, and is jewelry fit for royalty!

Collected before 1970.
