Lascaux Cave High Quality Art Print - XLarge

Lascaux cave is the most celebrated and famous painted cave in the world. It was discovered in 1940 by boys that were chasing their dog through the countryside. They followed their dog down a hole to discover a complex of fantastic caves near the village of Montignac, in southwestern France.

Referred to as "The Sistine Chapel of Prehistory," by Abbe Breuil, the quality of the cave paintings is amazing. They are comprised of 915 documented animal images consisting of a variety of horses, bovines (aurochs), stags, a bear and even a unicorn. The cave has about 2,000 figures in total, consisting of animals figures, human shapes, and primitive symbols. These images were painted onto the walls with red, yellow, and black colors from a variety of mineral pigments such as iron oxide (ochre), hematite, goethite, and manganese-containing pigments. Charcoal was seldomly used. The animals are consistent with the fossil record of the Upper Paleolithic time.
