"Hell's Gate" African Rift Valley Kenya
The Hell's Gate "African Rift Valley" location is one of the most interesting and famous geological locations on our Planet. Not only is this specimen from one of the filming locations for the action-packed adventure Lara Croft Tomb Raider "Cradle of Life," but the area holds special significance to the history of early mankind and the continuing changing geological evolution of the continent of Africa itself.
The Hell's Gate National Park has many interesting geological attributes. It is named after a narrow break in the cliffs (the gate), which once hosted a tributary of a prehistoric lake that nurtured early humans in this Rift Valley region. The Great Rift Valley is a geological term that actually refers to the valley of the East African Rift. This region is in the process of intense geological action, splitting the African Plate into two new separate plates, the Nubian Plate and the Somali Plate. The two plates are thought to have intially formed about 35 million years ago and the separation is ongoing in varying intensities.
The East African Rift valley is at its deepest just north of Nairobi, Kenya. The lakes in this Eastern Rift have no outlet to the sea and tend to be shallow with a high mineral content as the evaporation of water leaves the salts behind. Lake Magadi has high concentrations of soda (sodium carbonate) and Lake Elmenteita, Lake Bogoria, and Lake Nakuru are all strongly alkaline, while the freshwater springs supplying Lake Naivasha (location of "Hell's Gate") are essential in supporting the evolving biodiversity.
Two extinct volcanoes located in the Hell's Gate area and can be seen along with various obsidian outcrops. A smaller gorge leads from the two volcanic plugs Fischer's Tower and Central Tower with a path that descends into hot springs that have rocks hot enough to cause burns, and sulfuric water containing extreomphiles.
This specimen was legally obtained in a scientific trade.
