Banded Iron Itabira Iron Quadrangle Brazil
Banded iron formations (also known as BIFs) are distinctive units of sedimentary rock that are predominantly of Precambrian age.
Banded iron formations are typically comprised of repeated thin layers of black to silver iron oxides. They are often red in color and are either magnetite (Fe3O4) or hematite (Fe2O3). They alternate with bands of iron-poor shales and cherts.
Banded irons are among the oldest known rock formations (having formed ca. 3,700 million years ago) and can be found in South Africa, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Russia, India, the Ukraine, and the United States.
This specimen of Banded Iron is from the Itabira Iron Quadrangle, Minas Gerais, Brazil. This locale is mined for iron, gold, and palladium with associated unique precious-metal-bearing mineral assemblage.
