Another "shock wave frozen in stone"! Remnant of the giant asteroid impact at Beaverhead, Montana about 600 million years ago. The rise of the Rocky Mountains distorted the crater, but it seems to have originally been over 60 miles in diameter!

Beautiful red quartzite shatter cone with classic shatter cone "horsetails" on front and back faces; a great example of what one expert called the "finest shatter cones on Earth".
