LARGE FULGURITES - 3 available as of 7/12/09 Size: 7" Diameter, 8-9.5" L

3 Fulgurites about 3 INCHES each; 3 Quartz Points about 3 INCHES each

Fulgurite Winds Chimes could EASILY be one of the world’s most unique gifts. The combination of the quartz crystals and the fulgurites produce an ethereal ”other worldly” sound.

Fulgurites are formed when lighting strikes the sand, releasing one of nature’s most power-packed energies. The lightning forms an amorphous glass with temperatures reaching 30,000 degrees Kelvin. Fulgurites have been a novelty in many popular movies and are truly mysterious.

Giant fulgurites with giant crystals as seen in a popular movie would cost several thousand dollars to create. This windchime creates a similar effect without the huge cost.

About the materials used to create the wind chime: The fulgurites are from Florida and the premium grade laser quartz crystals are from Arkansas.

The wind chime is called "Force of Nature "because it is decorated with items that were created by nature’s force in some manner. The accents ocean jasper was pounded by the sea; the snowflake obsidian accents were created in the depths of the earth; the pearl accents reflect the perfect beauty, harmony and mystery of the sea with its lacquered hues.

The fulgurites are accented with a silver drop bead, beautiful ocean jasper bead accent from Madagascar, wooden beads and onyx. The quartz crystals are accented with a silver drop bead, natural pearl, wooden beads and snowflake obsidian.

Why use the accent ocean jasper? The word "Ocean" comes mainly from the location at the edge of the sea, along the northwest coast of Madagascar where the deposit was found. The forms in the rock itself are also suggestive of the pounding surf. The jasper is made out of rhyolite which is an igneous rock, rich in silica. As it cools, sometimes the silica starts to precipitate out of the magma. Obsidian is a type of naturally occurring glass formed as an extrusive igneous rock. It is produced when felsic lava extruded from a volcano cools rapidly through the glass transition temperature and freezes without sufficient time for crystal growth.

Obsidian is commonly found within the margins of rhyolitic lava flows known as obsidian flows, where cooling of the lava is rapid. A very few samples are nearly clear. In some stones, the inclusion of small, white, radially clustered crystals of cristobalite in the black glass produce a blotchy or snowflake pattern (snowflake obsidian, like the sample on the windchime).

Almost any shelled mollusk can, by natural processes, produce some kind of "pearl" when an irritating microscopic object becomes trapped within the mollusk's mantle folds. This secretion process is repeated many times, thus producing a pearl. Natural pearls come in many shapes, with round ones being comparatively rare.

The center wooden circle encourages contact between the quartz points and other fulgurites to promote sound. We use only the sturdiest fulgurites in this product, of which only 1 in about 250 fulgurites found are useable in this way. Because of their size the estimated value of each fulgurite exceeds $200. These wind chimes were made for a mainly decorative purpose and are hand strung and wire wrapped in sterling silver.
