The Gibeon Meteorite strewn field fell in Namibia, Africa. This iron meteorite is a blend of iron (95%)and nickel, which is a mixture almost completely unique to meteorites. It also has the famed "Widmanstatten Pattern," which under slow cooling conditions leads to a separation of minerals into the interleaving bands. The crystalline patterns become visible when the meteorites are cut and polished.

Meteorites are believed to be small fragments of asteroids, broken off during the constant collisions that occur between asteroidal objects over time. Certain large fragments have impacted the Earth, Moon, and other solar system bodies with enough energy to create impact craters.

Meteorites are about seven hundred million years older than the oldest rocks on Earth, making them, in our brief lifetimes, seemingly "eternal."
